Gaining trust as a supportive communication skill will be my topic. Working with children, parents, and other staff members requires trust to develop strong, collaborative relationships and encourage open communication. After watching this video, I. realized two important points where the behavior analyst showed the ability to build trust are transparency and open communication combined with attentive listening. The behavior analyst made eye contact, nodded in recognition, and listened carefully to a parent’s worries without interrupting. By proving the parent’s emotions and providing comfort that their worries were acknowledged, they demonstrated empathy. This is a good example of building trust since it shows respect for the viewpoint of the parent, thereby enabling a trusting connection by means of which the parent feels understood and valuable. Using simple terms the parent could understand the behavior analyst outlined the techniques they were applying and their reasons. This transparency shows that the behavior analyst is open to communication and is not hiding anything, thereby helping to create trust. Transparency lets others know the rationale behind choices, thereby enabling them to feel secure and comfortable in the process.
