(with any investigation, it is important for the first officer that arrives on scene to secure the crime scene. First, it is important to note whether the officer was called to a burglary in progress or a burglary that seemed to have occurred earlier. When an officer is called to a burglary in progress, the officer should make sure that the suspect is or isn’t at the crime scene. Once it has been determined that the suspect is not at the crime scene, the officer can secure the crime scene and start their investigation process which is the second step to investigating a burglary (Fisher, et al, 2022). There should be clear and efficient crime scene management where a lead investigator coordinates the scene (Barbaro & Mishra, 2022). The next step should be searching the scene. When investigating a burglary, the investigator should start at the point of entry and collect any physical evidence if present (Fisher, et al, 2022). There are many points of entry a burglar may use which can include a door, a window, the roof, through walls, and even through crawl spaces in floors. Entry through windows could leave behind glass fragments if the suspect broke the glass. These glass fragments can get on the burglar’s clothing, so it is important for the investigator to collect broken glass fragments as evidence and for analysis (Fisher, et al, 2022). The window, any edges and any latches should be dusted for possible prints. Whether the burglary entered through a door, window or even wall, tool marks may be left behind and should be collected. The surrounding areas of the crime scene should also be searched for any evidence such as footprints, tools, and clothing. Surrounding areas could have possible video surveillance cameras which can be vital in the investigation. Any fences and gates should also be examined for any trace evidence (Fisher, et al, 2022). When it comes to burglaries, the suspect can leave traces of evidence such as fingerprints, shoe prints, tool marks and even hair fibers, but a skilled burglar will leave as little evidence as possible (Fisher, et al, 2022). If the suspect is a skilled burglar, investigators should consider if there is a modus operandi and if there are any similarities with other burglaries that have occurred, this can be determined after evaluating the scene and collecting enough evidence)
